PHYSIOTHERAPY

Your initial assessment will last up to an hour. It is important that we have time to fully assess your problem and treat you before you leave, as what you will be doing between visits can often be the most important part of your treatment.

Your assessment will consist of taking a detailed history of your problem, followed by a physical examination. Once we have finished, you will be given an explanation of what we think is going on and what we can do to help. This will be in straight forward, easy to understand terms without any fancy words or terminology.

TREATMENT

After your assessment your treatment options will be explained. You may only require one initial treatment or it might be beneficial for you to return for follow up sessions. Your treatment will likely consist of a combination of the following:

  • Manual Therapy: This involves the manipulation/mobilisation of joints and soft tissues with an aim to reduce pain, increase range of movement and improve function.

  • Massage: Also a manual therapy technique, is used on the soft tissues of the body such as the muscles and connective tissue. The aim is to improve circulation and lymph drainage, increase proprioception and help restore the normal function of the tissue.

  • Home Exercise Program: This is normally an essential part of treatment given on the first session to enable you to relearn movement patterns you may have lost which have lead to your current problem. Exercises are always taught in detail and you will only ever be given 2 or 3 at a time so you can focus on doing them well and correctly. They will then be progressed at future sessions if needed.

  • Acupuncture: Acupuncture is used within the practice of physiotherapy to help reduce pain. It's basis is in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TMC) and consists of inserting very fine needles at certain points along the meridians (or energy lines) of the body to help ease pain and inflammation.

  • Movement Therapy: The foundation of the movement therapy I use is yoga, Pilates and Anatomy in Motion. Assessing where the body is restricted, possibly due to past injury, trauma or illness and working to restore those movement patterns and integrate them into every day function.
